No sábado passado, se
realizou uma oficina de vídeo maravilhosa na Ay Caramela! um espaço
autogerido que fica no centro de São Paulo, em Sé. Entre 10 e 15
pessoas participavam, algumas são participantes regulares, algumas
são mais novas e só ficavam lá poucas vezes antes.

O assunto da oficina é o
uso de dispositivos móveis em software livre para filmar e criar
vídeos curtos, feito por a população em situação da rua. A
oficina fica agora no segundo semestre e consiste duma série de
encontros cada sábado. No último sábado, 3 vídeos já estavam
prontos e mais viram em breve. No fim dessa oficina terá uma mostra
pública na Praça de Sé e em outros lugares, então em esses
lugares onda a vida da população em situação da rua acontece. Os
vídeos se tratam de varias temas, fictício ou real, mas com assunto
geral – a vida na rua.

No começo da oficina,
celulares foram usados para gravar os vídeos. O problema mais grave
foi a mal qualidade do som. A gente precisava colocar lendas nos
vídeos (em portuguese) por que não estava possível entender
entrevistas ou conversas enter as pessoas filmados. Agora, uma câmera
digital está usado que produze som e vídeo de qualidade muito mais
alta.

Durante o encontro, as
pessoas discutiam também sobre as vantagens e desvantagens da
realização da oficina.

Desavantagens apercebidos
foram

• Software livre está
  usado para cortar e finalizar os vídeos. Esse processo precisa
  saber especifico, principalmente saber do uso de software de vídeos
  e de Linux/computadores em geral. Esse problema resulta em exclusão
  das pessoas no último passo da produção dos vídeos (exclusão
  digital).

• Os computadores
  acessível não dá para o uso de software de vídeos porque tem
  hardware fraco que não está suficiente para manipulação de
  imagens.

• Os celulares usados
  antigamente não deram principalmente por causa da mal qualidade do
  som deles.

Avantagens apercebidos
foram

• Antigamente as
  pessoas não sabiam que está possível produzir própria mídia.
  Agora o coletivo possui esse conhecimento porque a saber necessário
  era distribuído durante da oficina (distribuição de
  conhecimento/saber).

• Durante da
  oficina/dentro do coletivo tem espaço para discutir e trocar ideias
  e para realizar os pontos fracos e fortes da oficina e para pensar
  sobre alternativas (exclusão digital, meios de produção mais
  simples).

• As pessoas em
  situação da rua tem uma vontade forte a mostrar e falar sobre a
  situação da vida delas. Os vídeos são uma mídia forte para
  transportar os desejos, problemas e vontades para uma audiência
  larga e publica.

• As pessoas têm um
  monte de ideias para realizar, em relação de fazer filmes, de auto
  organizar-se e de publicar as próprias mídias para uma audiência
  major (mostras públicas, relatórios na imprensa).

On Saturday, a massive film-making
workshop took place at Ay Caramela!, a self governed space in the central area of São Paulo, called Sé. A crowd of around 10-15 people attended
class, some of them regular participants and some of them just for a
few times.

The workshop consists of a series of classes in
which homeless people from the surrounding area shoot and cut their
own short films. They use mobile devices for filming and free
software for cutting and mastering. Last Saturday, three films have
been already finalized and more are to come. There will be soon a
public screening of those short films at Praça de Sé and other
places as well, thus where their life happens.

The
workshop is now in its second period which is going to be finished
soon. The films are nowadays shot with a digital camera but at the
beginning, mobile phones have been used for recording. The main problem of
recording with mobile phones was their poor sound quality. Subtitles
(in Portuguese) had to be added to the shorts in order make
interviews or conversations understandable. The current short films
are produced with a digital camera and have a much better image and sound
quality.

During the class, several discussions among the
people took place which emphasized on the advantages and disadvantages
of the current workshop approach.

Aspects that still need
improvement are

• The films are cut and mastered with (free)
  software. The people usually don’t know how to use this software,
  thus, for cutting and mastering, special knowledge is necessary which
  excludes almost all participants from taking part in this process.
• Cutting and post production needs hardware with a better performance
  as accessible to the people.
• The mobile phones uses previously
  couldn’t produce video records in suitable quality, especially when
  recording speech, thus subtitles were necessary

Some of the
predominantly positive aspects

• The people recognize that
  they are able to produce own media if they get advice in order to
  learn how the technology part is working (camera, software,
  mastering)
• The people recognize that the current approach has
  several drawbacks, in terms of (non) participation during post
  processing but also in terms of applied technology in general, which
  may lead in the rethinking of means of production (more simple to
  use)
• The people have a huge amount of ideas to realize, in
  terms of film-making but also in terms of organizing themselves and
  spreading the information about their project to the public
  (screenings, contact to the press).
• The people have a strong
  desire to show and talk about the situation they life in. Their films
  are a powerful medium to transport desires, problems and wishes to a
  broader audience.
