The introductory chapter is online already, the remaining parts will follow in the next weeks. I would like to make the whole document available on this blog, plus additional corrections, translations and content that did not enter the thesis but that I feel important and that I do not want to loose.
Let’s start with the Introduction
Writing this introduction feels a bit strange. Its is an introduction to my master thesisbut at the same time it is a retrospect, not only about the time I spent in São Paulo, as the thesis title is already revealing, but also a retrospective on what I did since then until this very moment, an imagination of this time in guise of a rhizomatic map, ‚a map that must be produced, constructed, a map that is always detachable,connectible, reversible, modifiable, and has multiple entryways and exits and its own lines of flight‘ as Deleuze and Guattari write in ‚A Thousand Plateaus‘.

The aim of this paper is to give an overview about the right to the city. The right to the city is a concept that is part of the discourse about contemporary urban development with its accompanied and resulting social inequalities. It is referred to in institutional discourse on international level by UN-Habitat/UNESCO, on city level in form of statutes that intends to grant more rights to city dwellers (such as in Brazil and Mexico) but emerges also in various forms in the struggle of (urban) social movements and grassroots groups all over the world. Therefore it seems to be interesting to take a closer look to its roots that has been initially planted by the French sociologist and philosopher Henri Lefebvre.
Due to its complexity, it is not the aim of this paper to comprehensively lay out the right to the city to its full extend and in all its possible forms and facets. The paper focus on the basic concepts and takes a further look at contemporary interpretations of scholars such as David Harvey and Manuel Castells. Hence, the right to the city is used here primarily to describe the development of the ‘capitalist city’, its negative effects for its inhabitants and the potential utopias that could be made possible, in contrast to other approaches such as the ‘creative city’ developed by urban theorists like Richard Florida.

During the last months several friends that live on the streets showed parts of their daily realities. The following post and several others that are going to be written soon, are transcriptions of the time we spent together. The used names are not the real names of the people (if not stated otherwise) in order to protect their privacy.
N. is a friend that I met the first time in July, by coincidence, when I met with a former street resident that spend some time with me and showed and explained how the life on the streets functions. N. doesn’t live on the streets (he said that he stayed only one month on the streets, back in the 80ties) but normally spends its time with the people at Praça de Sé and other central areas such as Praça Ouvidor Pacheco E Silva.
He defines itself as a kind of ‘informal streetworker’ that always talks and discuss with the people from the streets and tries to (re)establish their self confidence, tries to give them back the feeling that they are humans as well or just listens to what they have want to say because one of the sad realities is that the streets population is nearly invisible in the eyes of the always running citizens, although their presence is massive, especially in central areas, but also throughout the city of São Paulo.

Depois dois dias na rua com um amigo que viveu mais do que 10 anos em situação de rua em São Paulo (mais em breve), a gente terminou essa viagem no CONDEPE-SP que realizou uma audiência pública no Espaço da Cidadania “André Franco Montoro” no Largo Pateo do Collegio, 184, perto da Praça de Sé, no centro.
O CONDEPE ou Conselho Estadual de Defesa dos Direitos da Pessoa Humana é uma entidade pública que é formado por representantes da sociedade civil, movimentos sociais e autoridades públicas e tem o intuito de
“investigar as violações de direitos humanos no território do Estado de São Paulo, encaminhar às autoridades competentes as denúncias e representações que lhe sejam dirigidas, e estudar e propor soluções de ordem geral para os problemas referentes à defesa dos direitos fundamentais da pessoa humana”.
A audiência nesse dia era especial em vários sentidos: estavam falando as Mães de Maio que exigiam investigações dos assassinatos dos filhos delas, que foram matados em maio 2006, provavelmente por grupos de extermínio que existiram e ainda existem dentro da Polícia Militar (PM). A maioria das vítimas eram jovens negros, afro-indígena descendentes e pobres que moravam na periferia da Baixada Santista, área metropolitana da cidade de Santos, no litoral do estado de São Paulo.
